Luke 7:24-30
Summary
“I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is
least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." Jesus is speaking to us of John
the Baptist, probably the greatest of the prophets, and his role in telling about the
coming of the Messiah.
Reflection
Jesus in this gospel identifies John the Baptist as the greatest person born, but
he says at the same time that the least in God’s kingdom is greater than he. This
sounds quite confusing unless you consider that Jesus was referring to Himself.
Jesus was about to give his life for us on the cross and to redeem us from our
bondage to sin and death.
John the Baptist was the prophet who foretold of the coming of Jesus and His
mission, when at the River Jordon he proclaimed: “Behold the lamb of God who
takes away the sins of the World”.
So what can we take away from this reading? As I see it we are all called by God
to be “prophets” and to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. When said in
these words, many will vision a person standing on a street corner with a bull
horn shouting: “God is coming”!
But like John the Baptist and the other prophets we are called by God to give
testimony to Jesus as the light and truth. This truth
can change the world. What we need to do is to
live our faith. This is our testimony to Jesus. By
living our faith in all of our relationships and with
everyone we encounter.
