Summary
When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people
putting their offerings into the treasury
and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins.
He said, "I tell you truly,
this poor widow put in more than all the rest;
for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood."
Reflection
Does that passage mean that this widow bought her way into heaven? Are the
rich, by their gifts, assured their way into heaven? The answer is, “Not so
much!” Will God care for his widow because she is poor? Does God care for the
wealthy because of their generosity? Again the answer is, “Not so much!” God
loves and cares for all people, the rich and the poor. God’s love and fidelity are
unconditional. So if God loves both rich and poor alike what is the message for
me a blessed person? I have never wanted for anything. What is God’s mes-
sage for the
poor?
I suggest the
message is one
of percep-
tion. The widow,
because of her
circumstance,
places her in a
position to notice
God’s care for
